Until the early 20th century, Eindhoven was just a village. One day Phillips, a light bulb manufacturing firm, established itself there and remained in Eindhoven until 1997. As Phillips expanded, so did Eindhoven. Today it boasts streets studded with cafes and bars and galleries, museums and cutting edge architecture.
The Van Abbemuseum is a leading museum of contemporary art in the Netherlands with an impressive array of Picasso’s, Chagall’s, Kandinsky’s, Mondriaan’s and more. The Historic OpenAir is a wonderful reconstruction of an Iron Age village while the MU Artspace is a hybrid of adventurous visual art. To understand the origins of Eindhoven, a visit to the Phillips Lamp Factory of 1891 Museum is wonderful, also shedding light on how light bulbs were once made.
Famous city landmarks include the De Admirant, the highest building in Eindhoven, and the pinnacle of a shopping mall that lies beneath it. Another is the ‘Blob’, a quirky and rather fun blob-shaped glass structure appears to ooze its way up from the ground. The Evoloun building resembles a mushroom while the Lichttoren ‘Light Tower’ is where Phillip’s used to perform their ‘light bulb endurance tests’. Cycle buffs will love the Hovenring – a suspended bicycle ‘roundabout’ that hovers above the traffic.
From modern design to ancient beauty, the 14th century Old Tower and the stunning neo-Gothic Paterskerk Church are just two of the 140 Rijksmonumenten or National Heritage Sites dotted around this diverse city. Covered markets, malls, bookstores and boutiques provide ample shopping opportunity, alternatively, escaping for a few hours of solitude to the beautiful surroundings of the Genneper Parks will reveal walking routes, petting zoos, farm shops, cartoon museums, swimming pools and winter ice rinks, making one feel as though they have left the city limits completely.
Industry, design and nature; in the flash of a light bulb this city decided to combine all three to create a hard-working, exuberant, cheerful and relaxing place to holiday.

Best Time to Visit
Summers are definitely the most popular time to visit Eindhoven with its lovely warm summers. There is always a chance of rain but with temperatures up to 22 degrees, it makes a pleasant city break destination. Flights will be cheaper off season, in spring and early autumn, while the weather is still agreeable enough to enjoy the outdoors on foot. Winters in the Netherlands are not very extreme but can get to 0 degrees with frosts and snow.
Eindhoven is the place to be in July when the XO Life one day dance event kicks off the summer festivities in July. August is marked by fun fairs and outdoor events galore while the autumn gets cultural with Design Week in October and the Glow Festival, an ‘International forum of light in art and architecture’ in November. December brings festive illuminations, mulled wine scented markets and plenty of Christmas cheer.
