Frankfurt is Germany’s economic powerhouse but even amidst its skyscrapers, cultural and architectural treasures wait to be uncovered.
The old centre of Frankfurt, Romerburg, is filled with historic buildings from the 14th century Town Hall to the 12th century Alte Nikolaikirche church. There are some wonderful cafes and restaurants from which to soak up their beauty before taking a stroll across a 19th century bridge that leads to Sachsenhausen where more historic pubs wait to be discovered. The 15th century Gothic tower, the Rententurm and Dom Cathedral are worth the climb for their spectacular views. Be sure to pass by the Alte Oper opera house and the elegant square it lives in with its cafes and fountains and busting atmosphere.
Museum lovers have plenty of places in which to indulge their interests in Frankfurt. There are museums celebrating almost everything; museums for architecture, arts, sculpture, money, archaeology, world cultures, icons, modern art and German film. There is the Museum Giersch for photography, the famous Naturemuseum Senckenberg filled with dinosaurs, plants and animals and the very moving Jewish Museum.
Running through the city centre is Berger Straße with its small independent shops, cafés, and restaurants and where the famous Ebbelwoi (local cider) is served up in traditional taverns. On Saturday mornings the Museumsufer comes alive with a giant open air flea market while the Palmegarten Botanic Gardens, Grüneburg Park, the Zoo and the amazing City Forest are wonderful for days out with the whole family.
For the adults, Frankfurt promises a giddy nightlife with live jazz, heavy, hearty food, great beer and wine and clubs for dancing well into the small hours. Recuperation is easy with a trip out of the city to the tranquil vineyards of Schloss Vollrads or the blissful Kaiser Friedrich’s spa in Wiesbaden.
