This sad little onsen town is well past its prime and has become a reminder of Japan's recent economic decline. Despite the dilapidated buildings and closed shops, the famous hot sand baths are still impressive even if they don't quite warrant the extra time needed to get here from Kagoshima. Pleasant in a nostalgic way with a slight tropical vibe. I enjoyed the hot sand baths but half wish I had let Ibusuki remain as it was in my imagination without being tainted by modern reality.
