Swiss International Air Lines Flights

Swiss International Air Lines (also known as SWISS) took over as Switzerland's flag carrying airline in 2001, when Swissair went bankrupt. They currently fly to more than 100 destinations across 46 countries covering Europe, North America, South America, Asia and Africa. They're a subsidiary of the German airline Lufthansa, and use their Miles & More frequent flyer program. They're also a member of Star Alliance, and have codeshares with numerous airlines.

Swiss offer flights from Dublin and Cork. Popular routes are Dublin to Zurich, Cork to Zurich and Dublin to Geneva. Find more information about city breaks in Zurich and city breaks in Geneva, or read on for more information about flying with SWISS.

Why Fly Swiss International Air Lines?

How to Check In

There are lots of ways to check in for your SWISS flight. You can check in at the airport desk: they tend to open around two to three hours before departure, depending on airport. Some airport desks in Switzerland and Germany open 24 hours before scheduled departure. Online check-in is available through the mobile landing site, SWISS website, and smartphone app. SWISS also offer automatic check in. Choose this option when you book your flight, or later on through "manage booking." Enter your mobile number, and SWISS will text you your boarding card at least 20 hours before departure. If it doesn't come through, you'll need to check in using one of the other methods.

Seating

You can pre-book the seat of your choice up to 48 hours before departure, although Miles & More customers can book right up until the last minute. Standard seat selection is included in Standard and Flex tickets, but if you've booked a Light fare you'll pay CHF 12 for flights within Europe and CHF 29 on intercontinental routes. Seats in the Preferred Zone (near the front for speedy disembarking) cost CHF 25 (European) or CHF 49 (Intercontinental). If you've bought Flex tickets, you can reserve a Preferred seat for free. Seats with extra legroom are available to all ticket holders for CHF 29 (European) and CHF 99 (intercontinental).

Booking Fees

Swiss don't levy any extra charges for booking flights online.

Service on Board

SWISS offer three classes of travel: First, Business, and Economy. First and Business class passengers can enjoy gourmet food, but complimentary snacks, meals and drinks are served in economy class too. On short-haul European flights this will be a light bite, typically featuring products made in Switzerland. On long-haul intercontinental flights, hot meals are served. Champagne and chocolates can be pre-booked, ideal if you want to surprise someone special. As for in-flight entertainment, you can browse through the award-winning SWISS Magazine. A range of magazines and newspapers are available to download from up to seven days before your flight, too. Seat-back screens are standard on long-haul flights, with over 140 films and TV shows as well as special programming for kids. Wi-Fi is available on SWISS Boeing 777-300ER and Airbus A330-300 aircraft. It costs €8 for 20 megabytes, €17 for 50 megabytes, and €36 for 150 megabytes of data.

Punctuality

SWISS flights are reasonably punctual, with 75% of flights leaving within 15 minutes of scheduled departure. The average delay is just under 12 minutes.

Baggage Allowances and Fees

All intercontinental fares include at least one piece of hold baggage: 23kg in Economy, two bags weighing 32kg in Business, and three bags weighing 32kg in First class. On European routes, there's no baggage allowance for those travelling on Light tickets. Classic and Flex passengers can bring one bag weighing up to 23kg, and Business passengers can bring two bags weighing up to 32kg each. No bag should measure more than 158cm (length x width x height). Frequent flyers have more luggage allowance.

As for hand luggage, Economy passengers can bring one piece weighing up to 8kg. Business and First class passengers have double the allowance. No bag should measure more than 55 x 40 x 23cm. All passengers are also allowed to bring a small bag, such as a handbag, on board.
