Plan your holiday to Munich
Budget
Booking accommodation well in advance or travelling in the off-season can make a significant difference to the cost of a Munich holiday. Once there, a restaurant meal at an inexpensive spot costs around 17 euros (€), a local beer is €5, and a short taxi ride is under €13.
Getting around Munich
Munich's pedestrianised zones make the city centre easy to explore on foot. To get around the wider city, the public transport system is clean and dependable – catch the U-bahn (metro), S-bahn (train), tram or bus to reach most neighbourhoods. MVG Rad, the city's bicycle rental network, is a pleasant way to get around under your own steam.
Day trips from Munich
Munich's residents have a deep love of the outdoors, and there's plenty to explore nearby. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Mittenwald and Eibsee – all near the Austrian border and about an hour south by train – offer skiing, hiking and lake swimming respectively. Beer also runs deep in Bavarian culture: hire a car to tour the Andechs and Weltenburg breweries, both still run by monks.
