Terminal Information – Departing
Shannon Airport is one of the most popular airports for flying into Europe from the west coast of Ireland. You can get flights to Faro from here, as well as many other cities in Portugal and Spain.
Flying out of Shannon is usually a great experience, taking no time at all to go from check-in to security. The car park is only a short walk away from the terminal entrance. There's a restaurant on both side of departure, and a pub once you're through to the airside as well. You can also stock up on your favourite spirits in duty free, ready for your holiday. Make sure you've got reading material by popping into WHSmith too!
Fancy kicking back with a drink or two? Or maybe you've got a little work to get done? The Executive Lounge is available to use for €25 Euros, which will buy you 3 hours inside.
Terminal Information – Arriving
Faro Airport is the gateway to Portugal's sunny south coast. The airport works as a basic air hub for flights coming from Europe, allowing you to get to the Algarve in just a few hours from Shannon Airport. It usually takes less than 15 minutes to move through passport control and security once you arrive – allow more time if you're travelling with children though.
There aren't many options for dining in Faro Airport, but if you make your way out of the airport you'll find several supermarkets where you can grab some bottled water and a snack. Free Wifi is available throughout all of Faro Airport. There is a desk for travel information and maps of the local area.
Getting to Faro
There is a bus shelter located directly outside of the terminal building. There are 2 bus lines that go directly to Faro: 14 and 16. These are in operation between 5am and 11pm, by Próximo. It costs around €2.40 to get into the city, and it takes 20 minutes.
The most comfortable way of getting to the city is by taxi or via a car rental, of course. You can grab a taxi outside of the airport, but beware: fares are added for oversized luggage (bags larger than 55x35x20), and the toll for the highway will be added onto the final bill. Usually, a taxi into Faro will cost around €10-€16 between the hours of 6am and 9pm – taxis after this time are at a peak rate.
Make sure you carry Euros with you, but most taxis will accept card too.
You'll need to arrive at the airport at least 2 hours prior to your scheduled departure time, as Portugal is in Europe.
Faro is in Portugal, and they also use the Euro – no need to convert cash before you arrive! Faro is one of the main cities in this region, but Albufeira is also very popular with travellers from Europe. The Old Town, bars, and beaches make it a perfect little escape with plenty of sunshine.
What to expect in Faro
Faro is one of the main cities on the Algarve, a popular destination on Portugal's southern coast for beach bums and sun worshippers. The coast of Portugal is perfect for windsurfing, kitesurfing and stand-up paddle boarding. Sounds like too much effort? You could spend all day sunbathing too!
