Avianca Flights

Avianca is the national airline and flag carrier of Colombia. The name is an acronym for Aerovías del Continente Americano S.A., which is Spanish for Airways of the American Continent. It's the oldest airline in the Western Hemisphere, and has been in operation since 1919. Avianca is a member of Star Alliance, and has one of the largest networks in Latin America. They fly to 114 destinations with their fleet of 173 aircraft. Their frequent flyer program is called LifeMiles.

Avianca doesn't currently operate any flights from Irish airports. The nearest airport offering Avianca flights is London Heathrow, just a short hop across the Irish Sea. This is currently the only airport on the British Isles offering Avianca flights.

Why Fly With Avianca?

How to Check In

Online check in is available from 24 hours before scheduled departure. Avianca also offer mobile check in through a smartphone app. This downloads your boarding card straight to your smartphone, so you don't need to worry about printing out your boarding card. This feature isn't available on domestic routes within Brazil, or on flights operated by Avianca's codeshare partners. Self-service kiosks are also available at some airports, but if you want to do things the good old fashioned way you can head to the airline's desk. Airport check in is free of charge with Avianca.

Seating

As long as you're fluent in English (or Spanish), you can pre-book an extra-legroom seat in one of the emergency exit rows. This needs to be booked through a travel agent or an Avianca sales office, and will cost extra depending on your flight route. The standard seat pitch on Avianca flights is 31 to 32 inches in economy, and 40 inches in business class. Business class seats on the Airbus A330-200 have a seat pitch of 65 inches. Those travelling business on the Boeing 787-7 can really stretch out with a whopping 72 inches.

Booking Fees

Although no booking fees are levied, it's worth noting that Avianca may not accept credit card payments from cards issued in the Republic of Ireland.

Service On Board

Avianca offer two classes of service on board: economy and business. Complimentary food and drink is provided on board. As for in-flight entertainment, the majority of Avianca's aircraft boast seatback screens. If you're on a 'plane with communal screens, the Avianca app lets you access the in-flight entertainment catalogue from your own smartphone or tablet. We recommend downloading it before boarding, just in case. If you'd prefer to read, you can browse through the airline's in-flight magazine 'Avianca en Revista'

Punctuality

In 2017, Avianca was named as the second best airline in the world by the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU). Those surveyed mentioned the airline's punctuality as one of its standout points.
